This milestone marks the official transition of the Indian automobile from a tool of transportation to a mobile fermentation unit. The nation is marinating its internal combustion engines in a cocktail of corrosive solvents and political incentives.
Chemistry Class: The Hydrated Engine
The government assures the public that ethanol is clean and green. They neglect to mention that ethanol is highly hygroscopic. This means it absorbs water directly out of the humid Indian atmosphere.
Unlike pure petrol, ethanol pulls moisture into your fuel tank and creates a phenomenon known as phase separation. A layer of water and alcohol sludge settles at the bottom of the tank. The stated goal of the mandate is environmental salvation. Yet the primary feedstock for Indian ethanol is sugarcane, which is one of the most water intensive crops on the planet. Producing a single liter of ethanol from sugarcane consumes roughly 3,000 liters of groundwater during cultivation.
To save the planet, agriculture drains the water table to grow thirsty crops. Distilleries turn these crops into alcohol. Finally, that alcohol goes into steel tanks to absorb more moisture and destroy engines. It is an environmental cycle so backward it borders on performance art.

If the consumer gets lower mileage, the car gets rusted internals, and the environment gets a water crisis, who actually wins?
The answer lies with the sugar barons. The government provides massive financial incentives to the sugar industry to ramp up distillation.
